Kenyans accuse police of ignoring gang rape>>>

Kenyans are outraged that three men accused of gang-raping and dumping a girl in a pit latrine were ordered by police to cut grass as punishment. The 16-year old was attacked after returning from a grandfather's funeral in a village in western Kenya, Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper reports. Her back was broken during the attacks and she now uses a wheelchair. Rights activists and MPs denounced the police for failing to investigate the girl's complaints. I want my attackers arrested and punished. My wish is to see justice done Survivor "Everyone is incensed, to say the least," Saida Ali, executive director of Kenya's Coalition on Violence against Women, told the BBC's Newsday programme. The police were investigating the conduct of officers who dealt with the girl's complaint, said Halima Mohamed, the police commander of Busia County where the attack took place, the Daily Nation reports. Work STOPPED on Curitiba stadium in latest World Cup setback. WHY?

Work on a Brazilian football stadium which is being refurbished for the 2014 World Cup has been suspended after a judge ruled there were safety concerns. The Arena da Baixada stadium in the city of Curitiba is due to stage four matches during the World Cup. Refurbishment work on the stadium is already lagging behind schedule. Judge Lorena Colnago said workers were at serious risk of accidents. She ordered a new inspection be carried out before work could resume. "Countless infractions have been committed, in various stages of the building process," the judge from Brazil's labour tribunal said. She said workers were in danger of "being buried, run over and of collision, falling from heights and being hit by construction material, among other serious risks". 'No plan B' The news comes a week after an investigation revealed that construction workers employed on another World Cup-related project faced what were termed "slave-like" conditions...

A Point of View: Why people give into temptation when no-one's watching.

^Continuation,......... We distance ourselves from each other and take important decisions about people we don't know, can't identify with, or treat fairly. We defer to all manner of authorities, no matter how unhinged, and we do not prosper as a result. Stanford prison experiment *.Study of psychological effects of being prisoner or guard, carried out at California's Stanford University in 1971, funded by US Office of Naval Research *.Philip Zimbardo selected 24 random students to assume role of prisoner or guard; participants adapted too well to roles, and "guards" began to abuse their power *.Experiment abruptly stopped after six days (it was originally planned for two weeks) *.Zimbardo's findings still subject of debate; experiment inspired several films, plays, works of fiction *.BBC documentary The Experiment (2002) attempted to replicate conditions of study (pictured) Why do ordinary people commit evil deeds? A Point of View: Why people give into temptation when no-one's watching.

Why are apparently good people tempted to commit evil acts, asks novelist AL Kennedy. I spend a lot of time in hotels. They offer many temptations and although, like most people, I believe I'm more than averagely honest, nevertheless temptation does prove, on occasion, tempting. Well, it would. These days, mini-bars are often left both warm and aggressively empty to circumvent thefts, but since I have no interest in any mini-bar's contents I feel this bespeaks a hurtful lack of trust. And I wouldn't - unlike some acquaintances - steal a towel, no matter how snowy, or unscrew a light fitting and take it home. But in a hotel corridor, if someone has happened to leave a room service trolley unattended and the biscuits in my room are horrible and there are all these packs of Bourbon creams just lying there and they are for guests and I am a guest and I would even bring the bloody fruit Shrewsburys that were in my room back (and I'd point out they're not fruit Shrewsbu...
