Americas set for total lunar eclipse

As the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow it changes colour to blood red or brown Skywatchers in the Americas will be able to catch a rare celestial show as Earth's shadow falls across the Moon. On Tuesday morning (BST), the Moon changes colour from orange to blood red or brown in a total lunar eclipse.

FUTA Shines at International Conference on Internet Security

The Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, says an academic paper authored by a team from its institution has been adjudged the best presentation at the 8th International Conference for Internet Technology and Secured Transactions (ICITST-2013 ) held in London, United Kingdom in December 2013. The Paper titled is “DGM Approach to Network Attacker and Defender Strategies” was presented at the conference by Dr Kayode Alese, but was co-authored by Iwasokun Gabriel Babatunde and Haruna Danjuma Israel (all from the Department of Computer Science, FUTA).

UN shuts headquarters in New York over weather conditions

All meetings the headquarters were cancelled. The United Nations, UN, Headquarters complex in New York has been closed as a result of the snow and weather conditions across the U.S. A statement issued by Marija Rokuiziene of the UN Media Accreditation and Liaison Unit, Department of Public Information, on Friday, stated that all meetings at the headquarters had been cancelled. Similarly, a state of emergency was declared in New York and New Jersey, ahead of the storm that dumped up to nine inches of snow on parts of New York City.

Cassini probe has detected propene, or propylene, on Saturn's moon Titan.

On Earth, this molecule, which comprises three carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms, is a constituent of many plastics. It is the first definitive detection of the plastic ingredient on any moon or planet, other than our home world, says the US space agency (Nasa). The discovery, made by Cassini's infrared spectrometer, is reported in Astrophysical Journal Letters. "This chemical is all around us in everyday life, strung together in long chains to form a plastic called polypropylene," said Conor Nixon, a Nasa planetary scientist from the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center. A classic example would be the plastic boxes used to store food in kitchens worldwide. Titanis dominated by hydrocarbons - principally methane, which after nitrogen is the most common component of the atmosphere. Sunlight drives reactions that break apart the methane, allowing the fragments to join up and form even bigger molecules. Other common species seen at the moon as a result are propane, whi...

IPCC climate report: humans 'dominant cause' of warming.

A landmark report says scientists are 95% certain that humans are the "dominant cause" of global warming since the 1950s. The reportby the UN's climate panel details the physical evidence behind climate change. On the ground, in the air, in the oceans, global warming is "unequivocal", it explained. It adds that a pause in warming over the past 15 years is too short to reflect long-term trends. The panel warns that continued emissions of greenhouse gases will cause further warming and changes in all aspects of the climate system. To contain these changes will require "substantial and sustained reductions of greenhouse gas emissions". Projections are based on assumptions about how much greenhouse gases might be released After a week of intense negotiations in the Swedish capital, the summary for policymakers on the physical science of global warming has finally been released. The first part of an IPCC trilogy, due over the next 12 months, this de...

IPCC climate report: Scientist's worry ahead of release.

The latest update on the state of the world's climate will be released on Friday in Stockholm, Sweden. Scientists and government officials from 195 countries have been meeting all week ahead of the publication from the UN-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report will detail the physical evidence behind global warming. Delegates were discussing late into the night on Thursday the final wording of a summary for policymakers. What is the IPCC? In its own words, the IPCC is there "to provide the world with a clear scientific view on the current state of knowledge in climate change and its potential environmental and socio-economic impacts". The offspring of two UN bodies, the World Meteorological Organizationand the United Nations Environment Programme, it has issued four heavyweight assessment reports to dateon the state of the climate. These are commissioned by the governments of 195 countries, essentially the entire world. These ...

Global warming pause 'central' to IPCC climate report.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is meeting in Sweden to thresh out a critical report on global warming. Scientists will underline, with greater certainty than ever, the role of human activities in rising temperatures. But many governments are demanding a clearer explanation of the slowdown in temperature increasessince 1998. One participant told BBC News that this pause will be a "central piece" of the summary. Researchers from all over the world work with the IPCCto pore over thousands of peer-reviewed studies and produce a summary representing the current state of climate science. Governments are demanding a clear explanation of what are the possible causes of this factor Prof Arthur Petersen, Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency Its previous report in 2007 was instrumental in helping the panel share the Nobel Peace Prizethat year. A new Summary for Policymakers on the physical sciences, the first of three parts that make up a report t...

Glass rain may give planet blue hue.

For the first time, astronomers have determined the true colour of a planet orbiting another star. The world, known as HD189733b, has a deep azure hue - probably the result of silicate (glass) rain in the atmosphere, which scatters blue light. Details of the discovery, made with the Hubble Space Telescope, are to appear in Astrophysical Journal Letters. Although it might resemble Earth from a distance, HD189733b is a huge gas giant which orbits close to its host star. The temperature of the planet's atmosphere is a scorching 1,000C, and it rains glass, sideways, in howling 7,000km-per-hour winds. Its atmosphere has been found to be dramatically changeable and exotic, with hazesand violent bursts of evaporation. At a distance of 63 light-years from us, this turbulent alien world is one of the nearest exoplanets to Earth that can be seen crossing the face of its star. It has been extensively studied by ground- and space-based telescopes. Now, astronomers have measured its visi...
