Facebook's New rules

LaNUBlog.com latestarticlesbyiykemandela.blogspot.com was alerted to Facebook's change in policy by a reader who said the firm was refusing to remove a page showing a clip of a masked man killing a woman, which is believed to have been filmed in Mexico. It was posted last week under the title, Challenge: Anybody can watch this video? Some Facebook users complained about a video showing a decapitation being allowed to remain on the site "Remove this video too many young innocent minds out there shouldn't see this!!!" wrote one user in the comments section below. "This is absolutely horrible, distasteful and needs to be removed... there are too many young minds that can see this. I'm 23 and I'm very disturbed after seeing a couple of seconds of it," wrote another. The social network later confirmed it was allowing such material to be posted again. "Facebook has long been a place where people turn to share their experiences, particularly whe...

Facebook lets beheading clips return to social network

Facebook is allowing videos showing people being decapitated to be posted and shared on its site once again. The social network had introduced a temporary ban in May following complaints that the clips could cause long-term psychological damage. The US firm confirmed it now believed its users should be free to watch and condemn such videos. It added it was, however, considering adding warnings. One suicide prevention charity condemned the move. "It only takes seconds of exposure to such graphic material to leave a permanent trace - particularly in a young person's mind," said Dr Arthur Cassidy, a former psychologist who runs a branch of the Yellow Ribbon Program in Northern Ireland. "The more graphic and colourful the material is, the more psychologically destructive it becomes." Two of the firm's official safety advisors have also criticised the decision. Facebook allows anyone aged 13 and above to be a member. Its terms and conditionsnow state tha...

Social Network: Facebook editing function raises concern over Usage Abuse.

A new feature allowing Facebook users to edit their status updates may result in "stitch-ups", an expert has warned. Previously, an update would have to be deleted and reposted with any changes, losing any comments or "likes". But the new capability, introduced to help users correct spelling and grammatical errors, means posts can be modified, and their content changed. Facebook users who liked or interacted with the original post are not notified of any changes made. A spokesman for Facebook explained that the update was intended to help people address typos or auto-correct errors, but wouldn't comment on the potential vulnerabilities. The capability to edit posts is already available on rival social networks, and Facebook has allowed its users to edit photo updates and their comments on other people's updates for some months. 'Real concerns' However the lack of notifications means that users who may have liked an innocuous post, such as "I lov...

REVEALED: Modest Lifestyle Of Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg.

Google unveils major upgrade to search algorithm.

Google has unveiled an upgrade to the way it interprets users' search requests. The new algorithm, codenamed Hummingbird, is the first major upgrade for three years. It has already been in use for about a month, and affects about 90% of Google searches. At a presentation on Thursday, the search giant was short on specifics but said Hummingbird is especially useful for longer and more complex queries. Google stressed that a new algorithm is important as users expect more natural and conversational interactions with a search engine - for example, using their voice to speak requests into mobile phones, smart watches and other wearable technology. Hummingbird is focused more on ranking information based on a more intelligent understanding of search requests, unlike its predecessor, Caffeine, which was targeted at better indexing of websites. We just changed Google's engines mid-flight - again Amit Singhal, Senior VP, Google Search It is more capable of understanding concept...

Samsung to launch smartphones with curved displays.

Samsung Electronics, the world's best-selling smartphone maker, is planning to launch handsets with curved displays. The new devices will have plastic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, the company said at a Galaxy Note 3 launch event in Seoul. "We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October," said DJ Lee, Samsung's head of strategic marketing for mobile. But he revealed no further details. Digital display technology is progressing towards curved, bendy and foldable screens. In January, Samsung exhibited prototype products with bendy and extendable screens, but doubts remain as to how such technology can be mass-produced cheaply and reliably. "A curved screen isn't going to radically change the user's experience of a smartphone, but it does help Samsung differentiate itself in a crowded market where most phones are homogenous, flat-screen rectangles," Ben Wood, analyst at research company CCS Insight, told th...

Yahoo rolls out its new logo.

After an extensive, month-long build up Yahoo has finally unveiled its new logo.Overall the look is cleaner and thinner, and it is a new sans-serif typeface created by Yahoo. The logo is still purple, though a shade darker, and features all the usual uppercase letters in the same order finished off by the signature exclamation point, which dances around in some versions.Yahoo posted two flavors of thenew look to its tumbir,at midnight on Thursday. One is white text on a purple background, the other purple text on white background. Both have a slight beveled effect, though it's more noticeable on the purple text. It has already replaced the logo that appears on the top left corner of Yahoo.com."We didn't want to have any straight lines in the logo. Straight lines don't exist in the human form and are extremely rare in nature, so the human touch in the logo is that all the lines and forms all have at least a slight curve," Mayer added in her post, which goes into ...

Digital Indians: How Ruchi Sanghvi engineered her rise.

When Ruchi Sanghvi arrived at the Facebook office in California for a job interview in 2005, she found a menu card outside saying: "Looking for engineers." The start-up was located above a Chinese restaurant in downtown Paulo Alto. It was modest looking place filled with gawky engineers, black sofas, lava lamps, and walls covered with murals and movie posters. Earlier that year, the computer science engineer from Carnegie Mellon University had fled a job with a bank on Wall Street after three weeks. "I had panicked. I wanted to be in a business that was dependent on my core skills," she says. She had flown out to California, interviewed with Oracle and started out there, when a friend had told her about Facebook. "I didn't know much about them. I didn't even know that they had moved to California. I thought they were still in Boston working out of Harvard dorm rooms," she says wryly.
