The resolve by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to introduce Computer Based Test (CBT) as a way of reducing various problems associated with the conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) examination might still be a long way from success. According to an investigation by Daily Independent, only one in ten potential candidates that have registered to sit for the 2013 UTME would want to be tested using the computer. The others would prefer to be tested with the old paper and pencil method.

As part of its efforts to conduct the 2013 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it is set for a hitch-free exam as 166 coordinators for Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Paper Pencil Test (PPT) scheduled for April 27 across the nation held a meeting ahead of the examination. The coordinators are senior and experienced staff drawn from 190 coordinating tertiary institutions across the country.

The ASUP leader said the lecturers may call of their strike soon. The President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Chibuzor Asomugha, on Wednesday said the Federal Government had stopped paying the striking lecturers salaries since March 21. Joint Admission and Matriculation Board “This year, the examination will be taking place in 153 centres with 600,000 candidates across the nation.” The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said that President Goodluck Jonathan has endorsed the recently introduced Computer Based Testing, CBT, for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. This is contained in a statement by Fabian Benjamin, Head of Public Relations of JAMB on Thursday in Bwari, Abuja. The statement said that Mr. Jonathan endorsed the CBT while addressing officials of the Netherlands examination body also known as CITO in Holland. “The introduction of the CBT marks a new examination regime that will revolutionise the education sector,” the statement quotes the president as saying. The statement said that the president reiterated his administration’s commitment to provision of qualitative education and to make the sector a model.
