Bayne to continue racing depsite MS diagnosis

NASCAR driver Trevor Bayne has been cleared to continue racing after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Bayne, 22, made a name for himself in 2011 when he became the youngest winner of the prestigious Daytona 500 while part of the Wood Brothers Racing team. The Tennessee-born driver was ruled out for two months in April that year after reportedly being diagnosed with Lyme disease. Bayne, who drives full time for Roush Fenway Racing in NASCAR's Nationwide Series and part time for Wood Brothers in the Sprint Cup Series, has once again been struck by health problems, but will continue to compete after doctors declared him fit to race. "I've never been more driven to compete," Bayne said in a statement on the Roush Fenway website. "My goals are the same as they've been since I started racing. I want to compete at the highest level and I want to win races and championships. "I am in the best shape I've ever been in, and I feel good. "The...

Leno signs Leverkusen extension

Bayer Leverkusen have extended the contract of goalkeeper Bernd Leno to keep him at the club until 2018. The Germany Under-21 international joined Leverkusen in 2011 after spending three seasons with Stuttgart's reserve team. Leno has since gone on to establish himself as a first-team regular at the BayArena, helping Sami Hyypia's side to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League as Leverkusen finished third in the Bundesliga last season. And the 21-year-old is confident the club will continue to enjoy success in years to come. "Bayer 04 Leverkusen took me on as a 19-year-old third division keeper and turned me into the number one at a club in the Champions League," Leno told the club's official website. "I was really impressed with the massive vote of confidence back then and I'm incredibly grateful to the club for that. "We've been successful together over the past two years and I've been able to improve consistently due to the cons...

Stenson, Poulter among leaders in Turkey

Henrik Stenson and Ian Poulter are among a quartet leading the Turkish Open and Tigers Woods is on the prowl after a sublime second round. After heavy rain and lightning cut short Thursday’s play by three hours, the players returned on Friday to complete their first rounds. Swede Stenson, who can wrap up the end-of-season Race to Dubai title with a victory this week, as long as closest challengers Justin Rose and Ian Poulter finish third or lower, joined Darren Fichardt and Thomas Bjorn at the top of the leaderboard after carding an eight-under 64. Stenson then shot 68 in his second round later in the day, with all of his four birdies coming on the back nine. Poulter joined the Scandinavian on 12 under by matching his first round of 66 in a blemish-free second round that included four birdies in the last six holes. Julian Walters is also sitting pretty in a share of the lead after he carded a pair of 66s in his opening two rounds. The South African made nine birdies in his second...

Lorenzo clinches pole in Japan

Low visibility saw no practice runs on Saturday, but nothing could stop Jorge Lorenzo from taking pole for Sunday's Japan MotoGP. The Yamaha Factory Racing rider is within 18 points of championship leader Marc Marquez with two races remaining in the MotoGP season, and strengthened his claims of reeling in his fellow Spaniard by securing pole position at Motegi. Lorenzo clocked the best time of one minute, 53.471 seconds on lap 20 of 28 in qualifying, to heap the pressure on rookie Marquez who is eyeing a history-making title. Marquez (Repsol Honda), Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team), Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) and Valentino Rossi (Yamaha Factory Racing) rounded out the top five. Marquez was well behind Lorenzo for pace, clocking a best of 1:54.129, with each of Hayden (1:54.539), Pedrosa (1:54.542) and Rossi (1:54.732) breaking the 1:55 mark. Next in were Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), Alvaro Bautista (Honda Gresini), Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda), Aleix Espargaro (Power Electronics Asp...

Webber on top in final Japan practice >>>

Red Bull's Mark Webber set the pace during Saturday's third and final practice session at the Japanese Grand Prix. The Australian was 0.134 seconds quicker than Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, whose team-mate Nico Rosberg was third ahead of Lotus' Romain Grosjean and Ferrari pair Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. Sebastian Vettel (ninth fastest) did not get a run on the medium tyre due to KERS issues, which explains why Red Bull's dominant championship leader was not at top of the timesheets. Vettel had been second to Webber on hard tyres, 0.314s off his team-mate's pace after what he admitted had been an untidy lap. But few would bet against Vettel sealing his fourth in a row, with Webber and the two Mercedes drivers the main contenders. Kimi Raikkonen, Vettel and Nico Hulkenberg completed the top 10. Adrian Sutil was lucky to only sustain minor damage when he ran wide on the exit of Spoon and put his Force India into the barriers. Qualifying at the Suzuka c...

Horner plotting Nibali downfall

Chris Horner is confident he can cut Vincenzo Nibali's 28-second lead at the Vuelta a Espana in the remaining five stages. Horner has won two stages of this year's race but remains behind the Spaniard in the race for the winner's red jersey going into stage 17 on Wednesday. The 41-year-old is second overall, with Movistar's Alejandro Valverde third and Joaquim Rodriguez of Katusha fourth. Nibali has yet to win an individual stage this year but has produced consistent displays throughout the race to lead the standings, and Horner knows he will have to take advantage of any mistakes the Astana rider makes. "All it takes is one bad day (for Nibali) and anything is possible," the Radio-Shack Leopard rider said. "Everybody knows that it's really a three-way battle for the win, with possibly Joaquim Rodriguez also in the race. "All I need is a gap, 28 seconds, that's all, and I can take the leader's jersey." The final stages of this ...
