Boko Haram: 11 killed as Nigerian military launches assault on border communities near Cameroon

Boko Haram members The military said it also captured a foreign Boko Haram fighter, The Nigerian military on Thursday said it had launched an attack on some terrorists near the Cameroonian border. The Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, in a statement said the terrorists, who were cornered while trying to escape to Cameroon through Taraba and Adamawa states, came under fire from troops on patrol of the area in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign. Mr. Olukolade said some of the Boko Haram terrorists had come out of hiding when they “could no longer bear the hunger in their make shift camps in the forest.” Those apprehended, he said, led troops to other hideouts where fierce fighting ensued.

The modern state of Cameroon was created in 1961 by the unification of two former colonies, one British and one French. Since then it has struggled from one-party rule to a multi-party system in which the freedom of expression is severely limited. Cameroon's President Paul Biya has ordered the closure of nearly 100 Christian churches in key cities, citing criminal practices organized by Pentecostal pastors that threaten the security of the West African nation. But Pentecostal pastors said the move is evidence of Biya's insecurity about the churches' criticism of the government. Biya is using the military to permanently shut down all Pentecostal church denominations in the nation's capital, Yaounde, and the North West Regional capital, Bamenda, which have the largest Christian populations in Cameroon.More than 50 churches have now been closed, with the government targeting nearly 100 in eight other regions."We will get rid of all the so-called Christian Pentecostal pastors who misuse the name of Jesus Christ to fake miracles and kill citizens in their churches.
