Do you Know that "Walking may cut breast cancer risk in older women"

Older women who walk every day may reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. And those who exercise vigorously may get even more protection, according to new research. The study of more than 73 000 postmenopausal women found that walking at a moderate pace for an hour a day was associated with a 14% reduced breast cancer risk, compared to leading a sedentary lifestyle. An hour or more of daily strenuous physical activity was associated with a 25% reduced risk, the study found. This is welcome news for women who aren't very athletic. "The nice message here is, you don't have to go out and run a marathon to lower your breast cancer risk," said study researcher Alpa Patel, senior epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society, which funded the study. "Go for a nice,

Do you Know that "Heartburn drugs worsen heartburn"

Drugs commonly used to treat heartburn and acid reflux may actually cause heartburn. A new study in Gastroenterology found that treatment with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) actually produced heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion in healthy volunteers who took the medication for eight weeks. Although the findings don't necessarily mean that PPIs don't have a valid place in the gastrointestinal armamentarium, they do strongly suggest that overprescribing may be causing harm, the study authors said. "It is beyond any doubt that subjects with reflux disease benefit from and need treatment with acid suppressive drugs," said study lead author Dr. Cristina Reimer of Copenhagen University in Denmark. "But it is equally beyond doubt that PPIs are prescribed more or less uncritically for a wide variety of symptoms where the initial effect of the drug is doubtful. Findings ‘challenge the

One observer killed in Darfur attack >>>

New York - A Zambian military observer was killed by unidentified assailants in Sudan's North Darfur state, UN officials said on Saturday. The attack, which killed the member of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), occurred on Friday in the city of El Fasher. UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky said the world body's leader Ban Ki-moon "condemns this deadly attack on the military observer and expects that the government of Sudan will take swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice." Violence in Darfur and against UNAMID workers has worsened this year in the far-western region, where the uprising against authorities in Khartoum began a decade ago. Hundreds of people have died in tribal fighting, largely between Arab groups which analysts say are acting outside government control. The deadliest attack yet against UNAMID forces occurred in July, when seven Tanzanian soldiers and one Sierra Leone police officer were killed and 16 oth...

Gym mat death shocker: Body stuffed with newspaper >>>

The death of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was awful enough for his parents. Then came the doubts about investigators' conclusion that it was an accident. But the discovery that their son's body and skull had been stuffed with newspaper before burial added a horrific new dimension to their anguish and further fueled their skepticism of the official findings. "We have been let down again," his father, Kenneth Johnson, told CNN. "When we buried Kendrick, we thought we were burying Kendrick, not half of Kendrick." Kendrick Johnson was found dead in a gym at Lowndes County High School in January. State medical examiners concluded that the three-sport athlete suffocated after getting stuck in a rolled-up gym mat while reaching for a sneaker. Death was not accidental, family's autopsy finds His parents, Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson, never have bought that explanation. They won a court order to have their son's body exhumed and a second autopsy perform...

Georgia Tech 'rapebait' e-mail writer apologizes >>>

In response to an incendiary e-mail that drew criticism from online sites and on-campus organizations alike, a Georgia Tech student and Phi Kappa Tau fraternity member has stepped forward and issued an apology in the school's newspaper. The e-mail, which instructed fellow fraternity members on "luring rapebait" and contained several references to using alcohol as a means of sexual persuasion, caught the attention of online communities and prompted Georgia Tech and Phi Kappa Tau to issue statements and conduct investigations into the incident. The national chapter of the fraternity temporarily suspended the campus chapter. The sender, identified as Matthew, says he was his chapter's social chair, a position he has since relinquished. In the apology, he claims the e-mail was written as a joke, but should never have been written in the first place. "Misogynistic behavior is everywhere online and unfortunately, my attempt to ridicule it in an immature and outrageo...

The New York Police Department has identified the father of "Baby Hope" and want to speak with him as part of their 22-year investigation into the girl's death. Police stopped short of calling the man a suspect. "He is someone we definitely have to talk to," NYPD Assistant Chief Joe Reznick told CNN on Thursday, "But can we arrest him for this right now? The answer is no, definitely not." Investigators are looking for the father and believe he is in New York City. "We're very interested in him," a law enforcement official told CNN. "Baby Hope," a little girl whose body was found in a blue and white picnic cooler in a wooded area near the Henry Hudson Parkway on July 23, 1991, was never identified until this week. Police now believe "Baby Hope" was South American, according to Reznick. Reznick is "confident" an arrest will be made in this case, but could not state when that might happen. "Trust me...
