Ethiopia protest: Ambo students killed in Oromia state

At least nine students have died during days of protests in Ethiopia's Oromia state, the government has said. However, a witness told the LaNUBlog that 47 were killed by the security forces. She said the protests in Ambo, 125km (80 miles) west of Addis Ababa began last Friday over plans to expand the capital into Oromia state.

In what should serve as a fascinating appetiser for the 3rd African Nations Championship starting in South Africa next week, Nigeria’s senior home-based squad will tackle their Ethiopian counterparts in Abuja on Saturday. The match starts at 4 p.m. at the National Stadium. Both teams have qualified for the championship taking place over three weeks in three cities in the Rainbow Nation, and exclusively for professionals playing in the domestic League of their countries. Three Ethiopians were killed by Saudi security officials. More than 100 members of Ethiopia’s opposition Semayawi (Blue) party were on Friday arrested for staging a protest at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Addis Ababa. Some were allegedly beaten by the Federal police during the protest. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the party members had matched to the embassy in their hundreds protesting the killing of three Ethiopians by the Saudi security agencies. The Saudi authorities had said that there were more than 40,000 Ethiopian nationals in the country residing illegally in the country. This led to the Nov. 4 crackdown on them. However, the Blue Party Chairman, Yilekal Getachew, who confirmed the incident to journalists, said he was also arrested but later released by the police. Why the World faces global wine shortage.

The world is facing a wine shortage, with global consumer demand already significantly outstripping supply, a report has warned. The research by America's Morgan Stanley financial services giant says demand for wine "exceeded supply by 300m cases in 2012". It describes this as "the deepest shortfall in over 40 years of records". Last year, production also dropped to its lowest levels in more than four decades. Global production has been steadily declining since its peak in 2004, when supply outweighed demand by about 600m cases.

Kefelegn Alemu Worku, who US authorities say was responsible for persecuting, torturing and murdering defenceless people during Ethiopia's "Red Terror" in the late 1970s, faces up to 22 years in jail. During an "emotional" week-long jury trial victims, whom he personally tortured gave evidence against him, said US Attorney for the District of Colorado John Walsh. "Their testimony was chilling, as was the fact that the defendant at trial sat with his back turned to them as they testified, until ordered by the court to turn around so that his victims could identify him," Walsh's office said.
