Car bomb damages Swedish consulate in Benghazi >>>

A car bomb exploded outside the Swedish consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on Friday morning, damaging the consulate but injuring no one, the office's chief told CNN. The bomb detonated around 11:30 a.m. Surveillance video shows a driver parking the vehicle near the consulate's front gate and then leaving the car before the blast, consular chief Anders Nilsson said. No one has claimed responsibility, he said. Nilsson said he was in an apartment at the back of the building when he heard the blast. A "hail of glass flew through the building," he said. The building's front is "entirely black," and all the apartment's windows and doors are "blown out," according to Nilsson. "We found a hubcap belonging to the vehicle inside the consulate," he said. Eight people live in the consulate, which is now closed because of the explosion. The eight will remain elsewhere in Benghazi, Nilsson said.

Greenpeace activist: Russian court 'corrupt'.

A court in the Russian Arctic port of Murmansk has remanded 22 activists from a Greenpeace ship in custody for two months for allegedly trying to seize an oil platform. Another eight people from the Arctic Sunrise were detained for three days pending a new hearing. The activists - who hail from a total of 18 countries - are being held pending a "piracy" inquiry, but Greenpeace says the activists were staging a legal, peaceful protest. Among those detained was Iain Rogers from Devon. He said the activists had been made to comply with the Russian authorities against their will and that the justice system was "corrupt".

Russia remands Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise activists

A court in the Russian Arctic port of Murmansk has remanded 20 activists from a Greenpeace ship in custody for two months for allegedly trying to seize an oil platform. The crew of the Arctic Sunrise ship, who hail from 18 nations, are accused of "piracy" against an oil platform. Russian coastguards intercepted the ship on 19 September after two activists tried to haul themselves onto an offshore drilling platform operated by the Russian company Gazprom. Greenpeace says the activists were staging a legal, peaceful protest. Warning shots were fired as they were apprehended. Watch footage of the incident.

Greenpeace to appeal over activists held in Russia.

The environmental organisation Greenpeace is to appeal against the detention of 30 of its activists in Russia over a protest in the Arctic. It demanded their immediate release, after a court in Murmansk remanded 22 of them in custody for two months pending an investigation. Eight other activists face a new hearing on Sunday. The crew of the Arctic Sunrise ship, who hail from 18 nations, are accused of "piracy" against an oil platform. However, President Vladimir Putin has said the Greenpeace activists are clearly not pirates, though they may have broken international law. Led by Captain Peter Henry Willcox, who previously commanded Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior ship when it was blown up by French agents in a New Zealand port in 1985, the activists were protesting against the Arctic oil and gas industry. Greenpeace says drilling for oil in the Arctic puts a delicate environment at risk. Russian coastguards intercepted the ship on 19 September after two activists trie...

IPCC climate report: Scientist's worry ahead of release.

The latest update on the state of the world's climate will be released on Friday in Stockholm, Sweden. Scientists and government officials from 195 countries have been meeting all week ahead of the publication from the UN-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report will detail the physical evidence behind global warming. Delegates were discussing late into the night on Thursday the final wording of a summary for policymakers. What is the IPCC? In its own words, the IPCC is there "to provide the world with a clear scientific view on the current state of knowledge in climate change and its potential environmental and socio-economic impacts". The offspring of two UN bodies, the World Meteorological Organizationand the United Nations Environment Programme, it has issued four heavyweight assessment reports to dateon the state of the climate. These are commissioned by the governments of 195 countries, essentially the entire world. These ...

Charles Taylor appeal verdict due in The Hague.

A UN-backed special court in The Hague is due to rule on an appeal by former Liberian President Charles Taylor. Last May, the court sentenced him to 50 years in prison for aiding and abetting rebels in neighbouring Sierra Leone during the 1991-2002 civil war. He became the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II. His lawyers want him acquitted arguing that legal and factual errors were made during the trial. However, the prosecution has sought to increase his sentence to 80 years. The BBC's Chris Morris in The Hague says the court's decision will be closely watched because the guilty verdict was hailed as a landmark, proving that even people at the highest level of power can be held to account. Charles Taylor, 65, was found guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes in Sierra Leone, including terrorism, rape, murder and the use of child soldiers. He was also found guilty of planning some of the attacks carried out by reb...
