Bangkok protests: Updated info for tourists

As day one of the anti-government "Bangkok shut down" attempt kicks off in the Thai capital Monday, tourists are advised to pay close attention to the situation and avoid all rally sites. The biggest issue facing visitors is mobility, as protesters have closed off seven major Bangkok intersections. The protests, aimed at forcing Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office, could continue for as long as a month. Though many areas of the city are unaffected, several of the rally sites are in popular tourism areas, including Silom, Asok and the

Attempt to shut down Bangkok protest begins

Rights groups and others have called on Thai authorities and anti-government protesters to respect human rights and avoid violence during mass demonstrations in Thailand's capital, Bangkok. The People's Democratic Reform Committee protest group -- which hopes to force Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office -- launched its "Bangkok shutdown," intended to last a month, Monday. The protesters plan to achieve their aim by closing seven main intersections in the large and hectic city. They will also surround the houses of Yingluck and some ministers, and they intend to cut off electricity and water supplies at these locations and some government offices. Authorities say eight people have died and 470 have been injured since the protests began in November. Amnesty International warned in a news release Friday that violence could erupt again. "The situation in Thailand is tense, volatile and unpredictable

Rodman 'sorry' about North Korea situation

Dennis Rodman said Monday that he's "sorry" about the situation inside North Korea, but that his recent visit there with a team of fellow former NBA players was an attempt to do something good. The American basketball players stirred controversy last week by playing in a game at a packed stadium in Pyongyang, a surreal event at which Rodman led a sing-along of "Happy Birthday" to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Rodman has been criticized for failing to address North Korean's human rights abuses during his well-publicized visits to the reclusive country during which he has developed a friendly relationship with Kim. "I'm sorry for what's going on in North Korea, the certain situations," Rodman told CNN on Monday after arriving at Beijing airport from Pyongyang. "I'm not God, I'm not (an) ambassador, I'm no one. I just want to show the world the fact that we can actually get along in sport

Do you Know that "Walking may cut breast cancer risk in older women"

Older women who walk every day may reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. And those who exercise vigorously may get even more protection, according to new research. The study of more than 73 000 postmenopausal women found that walking at a moderate pace for an hour a day was associated with a 14% reduced breast cancer risk, compared to leading a sedentary lifestyle. An hour or more of daily strenuous physical activity was associated with a 25% reduced risk, the study found. This is welcome news for women who aren't very athletic. "The nice message here is, you don't have to go out and run a marathon to lower your breast cancer risk," said study researcher Alpa Patel, senior epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society, which funded the study. "Go for a nice,

Do you Know that "Heartburn drugs worsen heartburn"

Drugs commonly used to treat heartburn and acid reflux may actually cause heartburn. A new study in Gastroenterology found that treatment with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) actually produced heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion in healthy volunteers who took the medication for eight weeks. Although the findings don't necessarily mean that PPIs don't have a valid place in the gastrointestinal armamentarium, they do strongly suggest that overprescribing may be causing harm, the study authors said. "It is beyond any doubt that subjects with reflux disease benefit from and need treatment with acid suppressive drugs," said study lead author Dr. Cristina Reimer of Copenhagen University in Denmark. "But it is equally beyond doubt that PPIs are prescribed more or less uncritically for a wide variety of symptoms where the initial effect of the drug is doubtful. Findings ‘challenge the
