Nadal blitzes Djokovic to win US Open
Rafael Nadal has won his second US Open title after a gripping triumph over world number one Novak Djokovic on Monday.
The Spaniard continued his stunning season after outlasting Djokovic 6-2 3-6 6-4 6-1 at Flushing Meadows in three hours and 19 minutes.
It was Nadal's second grand slam victory of 2013, following his triumph at the French Open, and the 13th major title of his career.
The 27-year-old Spaniard is now third on the overall list of grand slam winners, four behind Roger Federer (17) and one behind American great Pete Sampras (14).
Djokovic dominated the winners, hitting 46 to Nadal's 27, but was undone by 53 unforced errors, compared to 20 from the Spanish world number two.
Serbia's Djokovic was slow out of the blocks in the opening set, making 14 unforced errors and struggling to find his range on both sides of the court.
It led to the Serbian being broken twice as Nadal won the last three games to take out the set 6-2.
After squandering two break points in the opening game of the second set, Djokovic finally pulled ahead when he broke Nadal following an epic 54-shot rally to lead 4-2.
Nadal broke straight back and appeared to have regained the momentum only for a couple of poor unforced errors allowing Djokovic to break again for a 5-3 lead.
This time Djokovic held his nerve to serve it out and level the final at one set apiece.
After sharing two breaks in the first six games of the third set, a mammoth ninth game proved decisive.
Serving at 4-4, Nadal saved three break points, including one with his first ace of the match, to hold and keep his nose in front at 5-4.
The left-handed Spaniard then reeled off four straight points in Djokovic's next service game to take a two-sets-to-one lead.
From this point there was only going to be one winner.
Nadal rammed home his advantage in the second game of the fourth set, breaking Djokovic with a crunching forehand down the line.
The Spaniard, who previously won the US Open in 2010, claimed four of the next five games and the title was his when Djokovic slammed a forehand into the net.
