Teenage pregnancy: doctor urges teenagers to abstain from sex >>>

Worried by incessant teenage pregnancies in the country, a medical doctor, Dr Aderonke Dawodu, on Friday in Epe, Lagos State, urged teenagers to abstain from sex.
Dawodu, the Medical Director, Epe General Hospital, gave the advice at a symposium organised by a non-political organisation --Progressive Movement in Epe.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the symposium is, "Cultism, Teenage Pregnancy and Community Education: Our Future in Question."
She said adventurous sex by teenagers had contributed to early pregnancies and child marriage among them
Dawodu called for sexuality education for teenage girls to prevent teenage pregnancies and a truncation of their careers.
"The teen age is from 13 to 19 years. At this stage, these children are adventurous, easily influenced and sometimes rebellious."
"Parents and teachers have a duty to teach our children sexuality education.Let them know the consequences of unprotected sex which may lead to unwanted pregnancies"
"If they are educated on time, it will help them to control their urge and ultimately reduce cases of unwanted pregnancy.
"We should teach them how not to get pregnant,’’ she said.
Dawodu also advised parents and guardians to show love to their teenage boys and girls so that they too could love and appreciate themselves.
The medical director added:"At teen age, development is still ongoing with hormones sending many riotous signals to the body system. Parents should give enough guidance to their children during this phase of their lives.’’
Dawodu said mass poverty was being used by some greedy and selfish men to lure the teenagers into sexual relationships.
Earlier, the Chairman of the association, Olorunfemi Salami, said the symposium was organised to educate youths on the dangers of teenage pregnancy.
Salami said, "we need to monitor the activities of our children and wards even right from birth."
"The crucial stage is the teenage years which is the most vulnerable period of their life."
Also speaking, Akin Adelakun, who claimed to be a former cultist, advised teenagers to shun cultism and other crimes.
According to him, most students commit crimes as a result of peer influence. He urged parents and teachers to monitor and mentor their children and wards in their bid to develop capacity against anti-social behaviours.
