Bayne to continue racing depsite MS diagnosis
NASCAR driver Trevor Bayne has been cleared to continue racing after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Bayne, 22, made a name for himself in 2011 when he became the youngest winner of the prestigious Daytona 500 while part of the Wood Brothers Racing team.
The Tennessee-born driver was ruled out for two months in April that year after reportedly being diagnosed with Lyme disease.
Bayne, who drives full time for Roush Fenway Racing in NASCAR's Nationwide Series and part time for Wood Brothers in the Sprint Cup Series, has once again been struck by health problems, but will continue to compete after doctors declared him fit to race.
"I've never been more driven to compete," Bayne said in a statement on the Roush Fenway website.
"My goals are the same as they've been since I started racing. I want to compete at the highest level and I want to win races and championships.
"I am in the best shape I've ever been in, and I feel good.
"There are currently no symptoms, and I'm committed to continuing to take the best care of my body as possible."
Bayne sits sixth in the Nationwide Series standings ahead of Saturday's final race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Florida.
