Yahaya Mahmood buried as Governor Yero, NBA mourn
The lawyer died at 62.
The remains of late Yahaya Mahmood, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) was buried on Saturday in Kaduna.
The funeral prayer was led by the Chief Imam of Al-Mannar Mosque, Muhammad Tukur, and attended by thousands of sympathisers.
Among those in attendance were the Speaker, Kaduna State House of Assembly, Usman Tahir; former governor of Kebbi, Adamu Aliero; and former governors of Kaduna, Balarabe Musa and Ahmed Makarfi.
Also at the funeral prayer were retired Bello Fadile, Auwalu Yadudu, former ministers Abba Ruma and Inuwa Abdulkadir, retired and serving judicial officers, technocrats and businessmen.
Mr. Mahmood died on Friday in his office in Kaduna at the age of 62.
He is survived by a wife and five children.
Meanwhile, Governor Mukhtar Yero of Kaduna state has described the deceased as an honest, hardworking legal luminary, who would be greatly missed.
In a condolence message signed by his spokesperson, Ahmed Maiyaki, Mr. Yero said it was “a great blow to not just the Northern part of the country where the barrister is very prominent but to the entire country.”
“This sad incidence is coming at a time when the nation needs services of honest and hardworking legal luminaries such as Barrister Mahmood.”
“The late lawyer is known for his consistent defence of the Rule of Law and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
“At this moment, our hearts and prayers are with the immediate family of the late Barrister. We however wish to urge them to accept this irreparable loss as an act of Allah which cannot be averted,” the governor said.
The governor also sympathised with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the judiciary in the country “for the loss of such an important member of the legal family”.
Mr. Yero prayed that Allah grants the deceased Aljannat Firdaus and also give those he left behind the fortitude to bear the loss.
A former NBA chairman in the state, Olumuyiwa Olowokure, described Mr. Mahmood’s death as “a very sad event and a colossal loss to the legal profession, particularly in the North”.
“He was somebody who had made big impact in the legal profession. He was kind hearted and very sensitive to the problems of junior lawyers,” he said.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and for his family to bear the irreparable loss.
