The Joint Task Force (JTF) has confirmed the death of one person suspected to be an oil thief at the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) trunk line in Bayelsa State.
The JTF Media Coordinator, Onyenma Nwachukwu, said in Yenagoa that the suspect was burnt to death following an explosion at Egbematoru, South-Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
“Information reaching us confirmed that there was actually a blast on the NAOC Agip riser.
“The cause has so far been attributed to possible sabotage by some disgruntled elements who have grievances with the operations of oil companies in the area,” Mr. Nwachukwu, a Colonel, said.
“JTF is not responsible for the triggered explosion and we do not have any security platform in the area.
“It is certainly not as a result of the security activity of the JTF against oil thieves,” he added.
A resident of the community who does not wish to be named for security seasons said that the dead person was burnt in early hours of Wednesday while carrying out the nefarious activity in the area.
“The burnt person was a member of the illegal oil bunkering syndicate.
“Yes, scores of other oil thieves survived the explosion with grievous degrees of burn,” the source said.
The explosion and resultants fire was controlled by officials of Agip, he said.
