Today on the Hill: Ottawa mourns following sudden death of Jim Flaherty

OTTAWA - The flag is flying at half mast over Parliament Hill today in honour of former Conservative finance minister Jim Flaherty. His sudden death Thursday at age 64 came as a shock in the nation's capital, where parliamentary business was abruptly put on hold. Flaherty had resigned from the finance portfolio less than a month ago, saying his family had urged him to step down. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has suggested that a more formal memorial for Flaherty is in the works, although no details are yet available. Flaherty's death means it won't be business as usual in the Commons today, where members of Parliament are expected to offer their tributes and condolences. Here are some other events happening today around the Hill: — It's time for the smaller parties to speak up. Political parties that are registered, but that don't have representation in the House of Commons, will outline their views on Bill C-23, the government's so-called Fair Elections Act; — The Supreme Court of Canada will issue decisions in three appeals revolving around credits given to people for time spent behind bars before they are sentenced; — And Climate Action Network Canada holds a webinar-based advanced briefing of a new report on mitigating climate change.
